The death in police custody of a 46-year-old artisan, Olaoluwa Bolarinwa, arrested in Ibadan has raised suspicions that he might have been tortured to death to admit being a criminal. Precious Igbonwelundu reports.
On March 29, Olaoluwa Bolarinwa, 46, and his nephew Oreoluwa Abiona, 31, were arrested by policemen at their W499 residence in Ekotedo, Iyalobe, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Five policemen – among them a tracker, Yomi alias System, allegedly carted away appliances including two television sets, phone, Abiona’s bag containing his charger and his brother’s iPhone charger that afternoon, before taking the duo to Mokola Police Station.
While they allegedly collected N10,000 to release Abiona the following day at Mokola, the policemen told the family that they were keeping Bolarinwa because they needed to use him to track one Bosun, a suspect in the bank robbery that occurred at Ile Oluji in Ondo State which left at least seven cops dead.
