‘Now, we can say we live in Abuja’

Just as a baby craves the mother’s breast milk, residents of Dafara and Kabusa villages, two Abuja suburbs welcomed with open arms the August visitors from Arise Women, a non-faith based non-governmental organisation championed by Dr. Siju Iluyomade. For years, people of the two villages craved some basic amenities. For decades, they waited on governments after governments to look their way and provide these needs, but all to no avail. So, when news filtered in that Dr. Iluyomade and her team were coming to address some of their desires, the people trooped out with open hearts and arms to welcome their helpers. Date was Friday 29th of November, 2019.

The events of Friday November 29th and Saturday 30th 2019 would continue to be remembered by people of the two villages. Though they live closer to the seat of power than most Nigerians, residents of these suburbs say before the interventions by Arise Women, living in the two communities was…
