United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to enter the transfer market this month after Marcus Rashford’s injury.
A number of strikers have been linked with a move to Old Trafford including Edinson Cavani and Moussa Dembele.
Former striker Carlos Tevez has also been linked with a shock return to United.
And according to The Mail, it now appears a loan deal could be the most likely with a week remaining in the transfer window and Slimani has emerged as a surprise target.
Slimani, 31, was Leicester’s record signing in 2016 but failed to impress and has since had unsuccessful loans at Newcastle and Fenerbahce.
He is currently with Monaco and has enjoyed a much more productive campaign in Ligue 1.
But Leicester would be willing to recall him and agree a loan deal with United, if they pay a £4m fee to take him until the end of the season.
United will be in FA Cup action against Tranmere this weekend following their defeat to Burnley.
But boss Solskjaer is convinced the club’s hierarchy trust him to turn the fortunes around.
“When you start on something you stick to that plan,” said Solskjaer. “I’m not going to change, six, nine or 10 months into the job and believe in a different way.
“I’m going to stick to what I’ve been trusted to do and hopefully that’ll be good enough, that what we can see is right. All my conversations with the club have been positive.
“We can’t react to all the noise outside. There’ll be criticism, you’ve got to take it, you’ve got to e stronger mentally.
“I am, the club is, the staff are very strong mentally and we’re sticking to what we believe in. I’ve got full faith.”
