Enugu Rangers & Enyimba suffer group openers in CAF Cup

Nigerian contenders Enugu Rangers and Enyimba were both beaten by north African clubs on Sunday as the CAF Confederation Cup group phase kicked off.The Flying Antelope sacked coach Ben Ugwu last week following a run of successive defeats, including a home loss in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) with Super Eagles assistant boss, Salisu Yusuf to try to steady the ship but the 57-year-old Zaria-born tactician was on the losing side in the first game in charge. Rangers took a 1-0 lead at home against moneybags Pyramids when Ibrahim Olawoyin opened the scoring in the 29th minute but home side loss Tope Olusesi to red-card before the interval.However, Mohamed Farouk scored from a spot-kick in the second half before Amor Layouni and Islam Eissa added further goals for the Egyptian Premier League side to make 3-1 after full time at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.For Nigeria’s other Confederation Cup representatives Enyimba lost 2-0 away against Hassania Agadir after a ‘schoolboys’ error at Stade Adrar in Morrocco.Karim El Berkaoui and Malick Cisse scored inside the first 20 minutes for the Moroccans, as the People’s Elephant were handed an early reality check in their continental campaign.Enugu Rangers will travel to Egypt to face Al Masry on December 8 at the Alexandria Stadium, Alexandria, while Enyimba welcome San Pedro to Aba International Stadium in a Matchday two encounter.
